Thefts Have Drawn Concern From Greene County Sheriff’s Office
Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert is asking for the public’s help with watching out for suspicious activity.
Recently, there have been thefts in the north and northeast part of the County with farm equipment and cattle reportedly stolen.
To prevent this problem from growing, Sheriff Haupert is asking for everyone to keep tabs of any suspicious or unfamiliar vehicles that may pass by your home and report them to the Law Enforcement Center in Jefferson.
He suggests that you take note of the make and model of the vehicle as well as the color, number of occupants, the license plate number or any other useful information before reporting it to the Sheriff’s office.
Haupert states that you should call the LEC if you see the same vehicle several times in one week.
The non-emergency number to the LEC is 386-2136.

The Friends of the Jefferson Library honored one of their own on Thursday with the Friend of the Year Award.
Founding member and past Friends president Lori DeBok is this year’s winner. She started the Friends organization at the Jefferson Library in 1993, was the group’s first president from 1993-1996 and again from 2004-2007.

DeBok said that she was honored to be this year’s winner of the award and added that the Friends of the Library is an important part of the community and she’s thrilled with how it has grown.
The award is given to someone who volunteers to support the library through activities and events and unselfishly gives their time to help the library grow.

An Iowa Man Was Arrested After A Vehicle Catches Fire In Greene County
Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says at 9:55pm on Friday, September 19th, the Sheriff’s office and the Churdan Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in the 1300 block of 130th Street.
Haupert states that 30 year-old Joshua Gingery of Slater was traveling on 130th Street when he lost control of his 2000 GMC Envoy and it went into a ditch. When he tried to get his vehicle back out of the ditch, it caught fire.
Haupert believes the fire started underneath the engine and the cause may have been mechanical. After the flames were extinguished and an investigation was conducted, Gingery was arrested for his first offense for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and failure to maintain control.
Haupert notes that no one was injured in the incident and the GMC Envoy was reported to be a total loss.
