Even ADM Girls Volleyball coach Mary Beth Scott has wondered aloud why her team should have such a jam-packed schedule.
After sweeping a three-match event on Tuesday at Pella, the Tigers (6-2) will host the Varsity Tiger Invitational, a five-match, round-robin tournament, starting at 4:15 Thursday.
The team will take on I-35 Truro, Knoxville, Newton, Perry and Woodward-Granger. The players’ endurance and conditioning will again be tested on Saturday, when the Tigers will play in yet another tournament. Scott said three multi-match events in six days will take its toll on the players, but that playing so many matches is good preparation for the conference portion of the schedule — and most teams in the Raccoon River conference won’t have played as many matches as the Tigers.
Scott partially attributed the Tigers’ fast start to two things: senior leadership and quality serving. She is happy with the performance of her five seniors (Abby Merschman, Maddie Mikkelsen, Kenzi Sutton, Kari Dufoe and Marissa Felt), many of whom have played together since their sophomore years. The team has also compiled a .916 serve percentage and 35 aces, though Scott said she wants her team to be more aggressive with jump serves moving forward.
