Greene County High School is in need of a new head wrestling coach as Kirk Davis told Raccoon Valley Radio he is retiring after 33 years of coaching the sport on one level or another. He spent the last two seasons as the head coach of the Rams and was an assistant to Zach Beekman before that.
Davis coached Brent Dennhardt to the Class 2A 157 lbs. Class 2A State Championship on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines in his last official match as the coach of the Rams.
He said when Coach Beekman shifted to the Middle School program following the 2022-23 season, he took the head coaching job, but didn’t look at it as being long term as retiring from coaching was on his mind. “I came back this year because of this group of kids. We wanted to go out with a bang, and we did!” Davis is an Industrial Technology teacher in the Coon Rapids-Bayard School District.
The Rams finished in 18th place among the 96 2A wrestling programs in Iowa. Dennhardt won his firs high school Stat Championship and he became the sixth individual Champion in program history. Those six have accounted for eight State titles.
