The AC/GC Chargers hosted the Madrid Tigers Friday night.
The Chargers girls were coming off a loss to the Des Moines Christian Lions Tuesday, and bounced back by imposing their will on the Tigers. Things got started early, as AC/GC ended the first quarter up 22-3, then shut Madrid out in the second quarter to go up 38-3 at the start of the halftime break. Both teams scored in the third quarter, with the Chargers going up 51-5, then scoring another six points while again shutting the Tigers out and finishing the game with a 57-5 victory.
Scoring was fairly evenly distributed on the night, with Shay Lemke putting up 13 points, Stella Largent and Camdyn Richter scoring 11 apiece for the top three scorers. The Crafty’s Coffee Player of the Game went to the entire team, as the load for the night was shared equally to get the job done. The Dub P Apparel Elite Fit Play of the Game came in the first quarter, with Richter picking off a pass in the full court press, dishing it to Lemke, who found Meranda Gruber open down low for the score.
The Chargers boys had a tough one in store for them, as the Tigers were ranked 2nd in Class 1A coming into the matchup. AC/GC trailed 26-23 at the end of the first, and after a slow start in the second, came back to trail 41-31 going into halftime. A big scoring quarter from both teams came in the third, and the score was 61-53 going into the final quarter. AC/GC kept up the scoring run in the fourth, but so did Madrid, and the game ended with an 84-77 loss for the Chargers, their first on the year.
The Crafty’s Coffee Player of the Game went to Joe Crawford, who was plastered to several of Madrid’s top players throughout the night on defense, and was able to hit some big shots throughout the game. The Dub P Apparel Elite Fit Play of the Game also involved Crawford, with a buzzer beater three pointer to end the first quarter, plus a nothing but net three in the third quarter that would have fans describing him as having ice in his veins for the shot. Scoring was also spread fairly evenly for the Chargers in this game, with Jathan South putting up 23, Crawford having 15, 18 coming from Noah Kading and Payton Policky contributing 16 of his own.
