The AC/GC Chargers basketball teams are heading into winter break undefeated, coming off some big wins against their rival Panorama Panthers Friday night.
In the girls game, things started off slow at first in the opening quarter, but a quick scoring run, along with some forced and unforced turn overs from the Panthers, put the Chargers up 19-4 going into the next quarter. Big scoring by both teams came in the second quarter, and AC/GC went into the halftime break up 30-16. Another close quarter happened in the third, and the Chargers were able to pull slightly more ahead and go into the final quarter up 44-28. AC/GC then put up 17 while keeping the Panthers to 12 in the fourth quarter, and won the game 61-40, ending a 32 game win streak by Panorama in the series between the two teams.
Foul trouble became an issue for the Chargers, juniors Becca Littler and Karli Kautzky finished the night with four each, and senior Shay Lemke ended up fouling out. As it has been in the last three games including Friday night’s game against the Panthers, it was all Camdyn Richter on the night, earning her her third time being named Crafty’s Coffee Player of the Game. She scored 30 points on the night, and hauled in the most rebounds for the team. Richter was also part of the Dub P Apparel Elite Fit Play of the Game, when fellow junior Karli Kautzky was able to thread the needle on a bounce pass, and Richter performed what’s becoming her go to shot after spinning around her defender.
In the boys game, things were closer for the first quarter, with the Chargers leading 25-12 going into the second quarter. The score gap only widened in the second though, as the Panthers were held to seven points while AC/GC put up 24, sending it to the halftime break leading 49-19. The Chargers held the Panthers to single digits once again in the third quarter, and went into the final quarter up 67-28. Both teams hit double digits in the fourth, but the gap was too large for Panorama to try and make a comeback, and the game ended with an 82-40 victory for the Chargers.
Foul trouble was once again an issue for AC/GC, as senior Jathan South picked up two quick ones at the start of the game and had to ride the bench for most of the rest of the first quarter. He and Payton Policky both ended up with four fouls on the night, with fellow seniors Noah Kading and Mason Wahl picking up three each as well. The Crafty’s Coffee Player of the Game became a family affair for the Chargers in the boys game, with Noah and Jonny Kading both being nominated. With South and Policky facing foul troubles, Noah embodied his position as the floor general for the game, scoring 22 points and hauling in seven rebounds on the night, while Jonny came off the bench and put up two quick three pointers in the first quarter to help get the Chargers scoring jump started. The Dub P Apparel Elite Fit Play of the Game went to sophomore Tommy Skram, who had a nice drive into the lane, went up for the shot, and seemed to float for about five seconds while he waited for the defender to clear out of the way, then put up the shot and scored.
Both teams remain undefeated on the season, with the girls sitting at 6-0 and the boys sitting at 5-0. They return to action after the winter break, hosting Des Moines Christian on January 7, 2025.
