Last weekend, there was a new piece of public art that was dedicated in Guthrie Center.

Main Street Guthrie Center Director Lindsay Gilland says that the organization began work a few years ago to commission a mural, including an artist search. She mentions that this included obtaining a grant from the Guthrie County Community Foundation, and tells Raccoon Valley Radio why they wanted to paint the mural.

“Main Street (Guthrie Center) really feels that murals bring a sense of home into our community. It also brings a vibrant downtown (with) the way they look. So, I know that the mural was really important to our Main Street community before I came on board. I came on board kind of in the middle of it, and we made sure that the mural really represented everything that we thought that Guthrie Center was to all of our community people that are here.”

Gilland explains that the mural contains several smaller images of places or things from around the community, that help those seeing the art see what the community is proud of. She adds that Main Street Guthrie Center is very thankful for the grant from GCCF that helped them to add the artwork, and for the artist, Kelly Nielson, for creating the mural as well.
