Last night the West Central Valley Wildcat basketball teams traveled to Earlham High School for double header action against the Cardinals. Both Wildcat teams would battle and split the decision, as the girls picked up a 44-43 victory over Earlham, while the Wildcat boys would fall 70-41.
The first quarter would be a slow start for both teams, as the Wildcats would only muster 9 points while holding the Cardinals to 5. The Wildcats would allow a three, then go on a 13 point run before allowing the Cardinals to score again in the second half and would eventually take a 26-11 lead going into the halftime break. Coming back from the break, the Wildcats would continue to keep their foot on the gas as Earlham would begin to fire up. The Cardinals would chip away at the lead, ending the third quarter down by 12 as the Wildcats held a 35-23 lead and would hit a three pointer in the final seconds to bring the lead to only 1 for West Central Valley. The Wildcats would be able to keep their composure, securing a 44-43 victory over the Cardinals although Earlham began to threaten the Wildcat victory.
For the boys contest, the Cardinals would quickly notch in four threes to take a 12-7 lead over the Wildcats. West Central Valley would not give up in the first, cutting Earlham’s lead to only four with the score at 16-12 at the end of the first. Earlham would begin to run away in the second, scoring 11 unanswered points and would eventually bring the score to 41-23 at half. Coming back from the break, Earlham would be firing on all cylinders, allowing the Wildcats to score only 18 points in the entire second half while notching in 29 of their own to take the 70-41 victory.
The Wildcat girls now sit at 3-3 while the boys fall to 1-5. Wildcat basketball resumes tomorrow as the Wildcats travel to Panorama High School for double header action.
