The Mustang basketball teams picked up the sweep at home last night against the Newton Cardinals as the Mustangs girls picked up a 67-17 while the Mustang boys picked up a 73-31 victory over the  Cardinals.

Devon Carlile got the starting nod again for the Mustang girls and quickly continued to make her presence known. In the first half, Carlile would notch in 14 points with 12 being beyond the arch for three. Carlile, Williamson, Brauch, and Jones would all make threes in the first half to guide the Mustangs to a dominant first half, finishing the half up by 32 points with an incredible 42-8 score.

With the continues clock for the entire second half due to the 30+ point lead for the Mustangs, the Mustangs would continue to play quick and aggressive. Carlile would not slow down, hitting 4 threes, 2 field goals, and 2 free throws totaling for 18 points. In the final quarter, Reis, Heidgerken, and Harvey would begin to score to help the Mustangs keep their advantage, as Heidgerken would end the night with 8 points of her own. The Mustangs would only allow the Cardinals to score 17 points the entire match, picking up a decisive 67-17 victory.

For the boys match up, the first half would by the Kyle Cason show, as the senior guard would notch in 17 points in the first half helping the Mustangs score a total of 38 points in the first half. The Mustang defense would fire up as well, containing the Cardinals to only 16 points in the entire first half. Cason would shoot a perfect five for five from the charity stripe in the first half, achieving the classic three point play drawing the foul on the lay up three times.  The Mustangs would end the half above by 22.

Cason would continue to dominate, adding 10 more points in the second half to end the night with 27 points. Coming off the bench in the final quarter, Logan would notch in 8 points to help the Mustangs pick up a 73-31 victory.

The Mustang girls now sit at 6-1 while the boys advance to 3-2. Both Mustang teams are back in action on Friday in Oskaloosa. We’ll have coverage on KDLS2.
