With the daytime high temperatures dropping below 30 degrees and the overnight lows getting into the teens going into this weekend, the National Weather Service analyzes the causes behind it.
Meteorologist Brooke Hagenhoff tells Raccoon Valley Radio that cold arctic air is moving to Central Iowa, but nothing unusual on the forecast. She describes that it is the initial sign of winter weather entering into the state, and points to the reason why it feels colder than normal.
“It feels definitely more significant maybe than it would in years past just because our fall was so warm that this first push of really cold air is extra startling.”
Hagenhoff shares that these temperatures are cooler compared to what is typically felt at this time of the year, but not uncommon for the state of Iowa to feel a rush of cold air in the fall leading up to the winter season. She mentions a light possibility of snow for the weekend and for drivers to be mindful when traveling.
