The residents of Perry came together this past Monday, November 11th to recognize the brave men and women who have served the United States of America.
The Perry Community School District held the 27th Annual Veterans Day Celebration at the Perry Performing Arts Center. Master of Ceremonies Mike Powell thanked everyone for attending and introduced his mother, Kathy, as the keynote speaker as she spoke about her husband and two of her sons, including Mike, serving in the military. Mike was in the U.S. Navy from 1992 to 1996 and told Raccoon Valley Radio what this historic day means to him.
“I think that Veterans Day is something that all generations should come together and honor the long, long history of people who’d been willing to serve in the military. In addition to being a veteran, I’m the son of a veteran, so understand the sacrifices that these folks have made for years and years. And oftentimes, even when returning from service, have to give up a lot as they return back to civilization.”
Guest presenter Matt Bramer awarded Mahlon Conaway with the VFW Veteran of the Year award, who served during World War II. Also, Perry Piecemakers Quilts of Valor members Barb Hansen and Pat Mundy gave Eddie Diaz a quilt for his service. Perry High School seniors Quin Mahler-Moreno and Owen Meyers shared stories of past veterans, then a video presentation was shown of veterans born in the Perry area. Additionally, the music department performed several songs relating to veterans.
