The Perry Jayette wrestling season will begin later this week. Julie Maylum, who qualified for State last season, really enjoys the people she gets to meet. “Obviously winning is really fun but I would just say like the community that it brings you. Wrestling especially for girls is such a sisterhood and just experiencing changing sport and how it impacts people’s lives.” The other State qualifier from Perry last year, Mercedes Ponce, echoed the same sentiment. “My favorite just the environment being with all these girls. I’d never really had that growing up where I was more surrounded by boys.” The popularity of wrestling has really exploded the last few years. This year will be the third year having a sanctioned State tournament in Coralville and the first with a two class system. Perry has been lumped into the “small” class and will wrestling with school with similar or less enrollment when the playoffs begin.
