With how dry field conditions have been this year, farmers have been able to do a lot of work in their fields.

Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist Mike Witt says that harvest has been progressing smoothly, though with recent rains things will slow down some. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio how well harvest has gone up to this point of the season.

“Yeah, the harvest season this year is moving quite rapidly. We are ahead of pace if we look at five year and 10 year averages as far as getting harvest done in corn and soybeans. And again, that’s not a surprising situation considering the lack of moisture we’ve had and the amount of time farmers have had to go and do that. So overall, as far as harvest timing goes, we’re looking pretty good across the area.”

Witt mentions that farmers are mostly done with soybean harvest, with over 90 percent of fields having been combined at this time. He adds that corn harvest has a little ways to go yet, as only 70-75 percent have been combined, and with recent rains, it will take a little time for the ground to dry out so that harvest can continue.
