Greene County plays a Class 2A Round of 16 high school football playoff game tomorrow night in Monroe vs. number 2 rated and undefeated PCM. Clearly the underdog, that’s a position Coach Caden Duncan’s team is used to. Just three weeks ago, the Rams were 2-4 on the season, 1-2 in District 8, and facing two games to end the regular season that could have left them on the sidelines for the playoffs for the second straight season.
Here’s what’s happened starting with week seven of the regular season. The current three game winning strak started with a 10-7 victory in Gowrie vs. Southeast Valley. A 10-0 lead was cut to 10-7, and with time running out in the fourth quarter, the Rams had the Jaguars pinned deep. The home team was out of timeouts, but drove the ball down the field and with only 14 seconds on the clock, looked to throw a pass into the Greene County end zone, but the Rams sacked the quarterback. SeV was not able to get set to run another play before time ran out and the win secured a playoff spot for the Rams.
To end the regular season, Greene County hosted Des Moines Christian, a team that was 4-3 coming in, but had been top 10 rated just one week earlier. The 14-13 win on Senior Night for the Rams again went right to the wire as DMC threw a 49 yard pass to the Greene County 3 with no time outs left and 17 seconds remaining. Instead of choosing to kick a field goal the length of an extra point, the Lions threw a swing pass toward their sideline, which was caught. A sure tackle in bounds kept the clock running and DMC ran out of time trying to get the field goal unit lined up.
The win vs. DMC put the Rams in third place in District 8 and a 30-6 win last Friday at Clarinda, the District 7 runner-up got them to 5-4 on the season and into tomorrow night’s contest at 9-0 PCM.
