The first choir performance of the school year is happening on Monday with the Greene County School District.

The middle and high school fall vocal concert will be at 7pm at the high school auditorium. High School Vocal Director David Heupel says about 100 kids are going to perform with the seventh and eighth graders going first, followed by the seven high school students that are auditioning for the Iowa High School Music Association All-State Festival the following Saturday. Next will be the high school concert choir and then the seventh and eighth graders will join the high school for one final song.

Heupel points out the beginning of the school year always feels like a game of Whack-A-Mole, where when one problem is solved in the ensemble, two more issues pop up. He adds that it takes some time to figure out everyone’s strengths and weaknesses with a new concert choir.

Middle School Vocal Director Victoria Anderson agrees with Heupel’s comment about the new school year being like a game of Whack-A-Mole and adds an additional challenge is that middle school choir is at the end of the school day, which can mean at times that a number of students need to leave then to attend their extra-curricular activities for a competition.

Monday evening’s concert is free and open to the public.
