A Greene County veteran was recently recognized for his several years of volunteerism.

According to the Jefferson American Legion Post #11, 55-year American Legion member Haven Frantz was nominated for the Shine the Light contest and awarded $600 from two companies for his years of service to others. Barb Labate, with American Legion Auxiliary, says Shine the Light contest is sponsored by Touchstone Energy Cooperatives of Iowa as a way to celebrate cooperative commitments to communities.

Labate states that Frantz was one of 75 volunteer nominations and some information about the types of things that Holsapple highlighted about Frantz is volunteering at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Des Moines for five years where he has put in over 600 hours. After graduating from high school and serving in the Army, Frantz then served for six years on the seven-county Board of Directors for Community Opportunities, along with being on the Grand Junction Municipal Light and Water Board of Trustees where he also served as president, and currently helps with Team Blue Cancer 5K Run/Walk at Principal Park in Des Moines.

Labate says even though Frantz was not one of the three individuals selected to be a statewide winners of Shine the Light, Consumers Energy Cooperative and Central Iowa Power Cooperative donated $600 to the American Legion Post #11 in Frantz’s honor.
