The Greene County Elementary students had surprise visitors on Friday from local heroes.

The Jefferson and Grand Junction Fire Departments educated the kids on fire safety and prevention at the end of National Fire Prevention Week. Crews were in the classrooms to tell kids about the importance of making a family plan of how to safely escape their home if it is on fire, along with the tried and true method of “Stop, Drop and Roll.” Students also got to see what firefighters wear so if they are in a real fire and they see the same gear, they know not to be afraid.

Then, the kids enjoyed being outside and learning about different equipment that fire crews use in different situations, the functions of the different fire trucks that were there and a hands-on demonstration of students getting to use the fire hose.
