A home in Jefferson sustained major damage from a weekend fire.

Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio the Jefferson and Grand Junction Fire Departments, the Jefferson Police Department and Greene County Ambulance responded to the structure fire on Saturday at 2:20pm in the 400 block of North Pinet Street. He says a fire started in the basement where the suspected cause was from a flex gas line that was laying on a cast iron sewer line, and that the gas line was leaking. Williams believes because the gas line leak was less than one foot from the pilot light of the water heater, that resulted in catching the basement on fire, which then drove the flames into the walls and through the roof of the home.

Williams notes that there were occupants inside the house that were able to get outside without anyone being injured. He adds that the home suffered severe damage in the accidental fire.
