Greene County Medical Center rolled out the pink carpet on Friday when they hosted Java and Juice with Jefferson Matters.

Imaging Director Heath Booth spoke about working with the Greene County Historical Society to bring Barbie back from this past June’s Barbie By The Bells to help them promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She described their Baseline Barbie is those women who are between 35 and 40 that are getting their first mammogram done, which is considered their baseline data.

Imaging Director Heath Booth

“This is our starting point. We aren’t familiar with the type of breast tissue that a particular woman may have because every woman is different. So because of this, we are extra sensitive to what may or may not be normal for each patient. Once that baseline has been established we know what type of breast tissue they have and we’ll be able to quickly identify changes from year to year.”

Booth noted that one in eight women and one in 726 men will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. However, Booth said the five year survival rate of early detection of breast cancer is 99 percent. She urged women to get an annual mammogram starting when they are 40. They also offer Walk-In Mammo Mondays. This service is from 8am-4pm on Mondays without an appointment and patients have to have a previous mammogram on file with the medical center and it has to be at least one year since the last one was done.
