Antlerless deer tags have been for sale in Guthrie County for a couple of months now, but those who wish to use them should purchase one soon.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jeremy King says that Guthrie County started out with the same number of antlerless tags as what it received last year, which is 2,350 tags. He mentions that roughly 2,000 remain at this time, but that won’t last long. King tells Raccoon Valley Radio of a pattern he has noticed when it comes to the tags being purchased.

“Typically what we see with those is that it changes year to year, but it’s a pretty common thing to say by the second to third week of November, those will all be sold out. So yeah, I encourage people to maybe have a little foresight in thinking if they’re going to want to get out. You can buy antlerless tags for any season, so it could be even for late muzzleloader season, that doesn’t begin until December and run through January 10, 2025.”

King mentions a number of residents from surrounding counties do not have antlerless tags, and can get one from Guthrie County and hunt in the county, which does not count towards their total number of animals harvested outside of the county.
