Two more hunting seasons are currently underway.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Aaron Arthur says youth waterfowl season is today and tomorrow, with the light and dark geese seasons from September 28th through October 13th. He points out for youth to make sure they are with a licensed adult when hunting waterfowl. Arthur talks about one main public body of water to avoid until further notice.

“One of our big duck hunting marshes, Goose Lake, is currently under a water control structure renovation. So we can’t really hunt it. There’s no real access to it. I know a few guys made it out during the early teal (hunting) season in some mud boats. But I was out there the other day and they’re actively digging stuff out and changing that out. We’ll be reduced in our little access to where you can go out duck hunting in Greene County.”  

Arthur adds that Dunbar Slough and Pound Pits within Greene County are typically the other good public areas for hunting ducks and geese. However, he cautions everyone that due to the current drought conditions across the state, including Greene County, the water levels have declined and if there are lots of hunters out, there may not be as many opportunities to hunt waterfowl.
