It is National Farm Safety and Health Week this week and as harvest season begins it is a good time for some reminders.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams advises farm equipment operators to avoid the state highways in the county, when it is possible to do so, but he also has this reminder for farmers.
“As an actual operator, some of the issues we’ve seen before is at night after you’ve been working in the field your brake lights, tail lights, (and) turn signals all get covered with dirt and dust. So just try and wipe those off before you go out onto the highway or gravel roads so that people coming up from behind can see you.”
Williams reminds motorists to take additional precautions and pass farm implements on the roadways when it is safe and legal to do so. He adds that farm equipment can turn into field drives suddenly, so motorists should be extra aware during harvest season for that as well.
