Another popular hunting season is opening this weekend in Iowa.

Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer for Greene County Aaron Arthur says youth and disabled hunting season is September 21st through October 6th. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio this is a good time to introduce youth to hunting because the weather is warmer. Arthur points out that if a youth has a hunting tag, it is valid until it is filled, and that means if the tag is not filled during the youth season, they can participate in the other regular hunting seasons, they just need to abide by the method of that season. He explains this additional requirement for any youth hunter.

“They have to be with a licensed adult. So they have to be sitting there with a mentor, they can’t go out on their own. That’s the big thing. Where the goal is that to teach them safety and have a successful, safe hunt.”

Arthur goes over the safety aspects for youth deer hunting seasons when using a firearm.

“When you hunt anytime with a firearm in Iowa you have to wear a minimum amount of blaze orange. That blaze orange is a minimum for a gun season is a vest. I encourage people to wear more. But make sure you have the appropriate blaze orange, it’s there to make you seen and make people safe.”

Arthur adds the public hunting areas in Greene County include, the North Raccoon River Wildlife Area that is north of Jefferson, any marshes in public areas, along with Squirrel Hollow Park and Pound Pits.
