Greene County plays non-district football tonight in Atlantic on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Football Friday Night coverage starts at 6 p.m. with kickoff at 7 o’clock. The Trojans have already played three games and they are 3-0 with an offensive average of 48 points per game. The Rams are 1-1 on the season and average about half of the Trojans’ total. Neither team is at full strength due to injuries.

Coach Chris Heisterkamp’s volleyball Rams played Grand View Christian (Des Moines) on Thursday night at Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny. Greene County won the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference match in four sets by scores of 17-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-19. The Rams are now 2-0 in the conference and 4-5 overall while the Thunder fell to 0-2 in the league and 3-10 on the season.

The Rams had an outstanding 70 digs vs. GVC and were led in that area by sophomore Libero Bellah Johnson with 20. Senior Hailey Carman had 12 digs with 10 from junior Lila Osterson, nine from senior Emma Ewalt, eight for senior Payton Kokenge, six from senior Violet Reedy, and five digs by junior Addison Gannon. Reedy, the setter, had 26 assists and five others contributed assists. Hitting was strong as well with 12 kills by senior Emma Shipley, nine from Ewalt, seven for Osterson, and three apiece from Kokenge and senior Ella Shipley.

The coach of the Rams told Raccoon Valley Radio serving was a factor that influenced the game. “We targeted their their best hitters and got them out of rhythm. I give credit to Payton Kokenge, who served a phenomenal 24 of 26 tonight.” Osterson was 18 of 19 at the service line with Johnson 14 of 14, Ewalt and Reedy each had 10 for 12 nights at the service line. “Our girls served to the spots that helped us pressure GVC off their game, and we saw their offense start to shake.” The Faith Baptist ceiling is lower than most places the Rams play and the coach said the players made a major adjustment with the passers working to keep the ball low. “Despite the slow start, we rallied with tremendous tenacity and had a fighting spirit that got the job done. It was a great night for our team (all three levels had wins) and I’m extremely proud of how they all played.”

Greene County still hasn’t played at home this season and they’ll be at Eldora on Saturday for the South Hardin Tournament.

Paton-Churdan started Rolling Valley Activities Conference volleyball in Churdan last night vs. Glidden-Ralston. Coach Makayla Spaar’s Rockets fell to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in the league with a three set loss. Scores were 14-25, 14-25, 12-25. Coach Spaar reports sophomore Alivya Smith led the Rockets with eight digs and sophomore Kaliyah Minnihan had a team best five kills, while junior Mia Russell led her team in ace serves with two. G-R improved to 3-1, 1-0.
