Some people go through life aspiring to reach their dream job and when they have achieved it, they know it.

That was the sentiment that Deb Wolterman had when she was hired to be the new Greene County High School nurse. She has lived most of her life in Greene County, serving most recently as Greene County Medical Center, working in several departments. In her career, she has worked in pediatrics, medical-surgical nursing, labor and delivery of newborns, emergency room, oncology, among others.

Wolterman explains that she wanted to be the high school nurse to give her more time as the head varsity cheerleading coach and be with her own kids that are getting older. She adds one other main reason for taking the job.

“Ultimately, it’s getting back to the root of my degree, that’s the pediatrics side. I’ll be honest like in healthcare, in the hospital you know Greene County Medical Center I loved working out there, but I didn’t get my ‘fix’ with you know the kids, the pediatrics. And I feel I’m at home, I’m where I need to be now.”

Wolterman shares the inspiration for making nursing and healthcare her career was from a young age when one of her cousins was born with special needs and her aunt and uncle allowed her to help with his care.

“Really learned all of his health concerns and anything from a feeding tube to learning different communication skills, and that just really, really piqued my interest. And I think that’s why pediatrics, and especially special needs pediatrics was my big realm in the beginning of my career.”

Wolterman is looking forward to making connections with high school students and staff that she doesn’t know, on a more personal level, while also getting opportunities to educate everyone on different monthly health-related topics to go along with her responsibilities as the nurse. She is grateful for the welcoming atmosphere and she feels she has reached the pinnacle of her nursing career.
