The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Football team won an exciting season opener on Friday night.
The Tigers hosted the Newton Cardinals in Adel, where they won by a final score of 13-8. The first quarter was scoreless as both teams had their opportunities to score. However, in the second quarter, ADM broke the score with a 43-yard pass from Junior Quarterback Hudson Shull to Junior Reed Obstarczyk to lead 7-0. Senior Linebacker Grant Engleman got a big interception in the third against Cardinals QB Senior Caden Klein. Tigers’ Kicker Ethan Asche had a 24-yard field as time expired going into the halftime break to give ADM the 10-0 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Asche added another field goal to put the Tigers up 13-0. Halfway through the fourth, Newton drove the field and ended with a one-yard Klein rush to cut the deficit 13-6. The Cardinals went for two and failed. On the ensuing kickoff, ADM’s Senior Returner Wyatt Schweiger slipped, pinning the Tigers deep in their own territory. Failing to gain any momentum, they were forced to punt from their endzone, and Colby Simons was blocked from Newton’s Skyler Milheiser.
With ADM leading 13-8 with six minutes left, the Cardinals had the ball but a key interception from Leyton Gerleman gave the Tigers new life with 5:29 left. Newton would have one more chance and on the cusp of the redzone, Klein threw his third interception to Brayden Rynearson with 11 seconds left. ADM went onto to win their season opener.
Klein finished with 163 passing yards, 121 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, and three interceptions. The Tigers’ Shull captured 157 yards through the air, 25 rushing yards, and one passing touchdown. ADM Running Back Talen Harvey led the way for the Tigers with 64 yards.
Newton is 0-1 and will have their season opener this coming Friday against Dallas Center-Grimes. ADM is now 1-0 and will be back in Adel to host rival Winterset on Friday. Raccoon Valley Radio will carry the broadcast on K107.9 KKRF.
