Even though the summer is coming to an end, the Dallas County Health Department stresses that hydration should still be a top priority.
Community Health Educator Natalie Peters tells Raccoon Valley Radio that drinking water is imperative for the body to function properly. She describes that water will assist with transporting nutrients and oxygen, regulating body temperature, cushion joints, and is beneficial for skin health. Peters details the right amount of water intake people should be enduring.
“The American Dietary Guidelines recommend about 15 cups of water per day for men and 11 cups of water per day for women, but you may need to drink more than that if it’s really hot out or if you’ve been exercising intensely. Those are the times that you especially make sure you’re staying hydrated.”
Peters lays out suggestions to help reach the proper water intake.
“Try to bring a water bottle with you when you leave home, so that you always have some with you. You can also track your water intake using fitness apps or just like a little notepad in your pocket to check it off every time drink a glass of water, and then if you want to add more taste to your water, you can try flavoring your water with fresh fruit or sugar free flavor packets.”
Peters explains that if people find themselves suffering from thirst, dry mouth, headaches, or tiredness, then it could be a sign of dehydration.
