Greene County began the varsity volleyball season last night with three matches at Dallas Center-Grimes High School. There were five teams at DC-G, but the Rams and Valley (West Des Moines) did not meet. Greene County went 1-2 on the evening with a victory over Mason City and losses to Ballard (Huxley) and the host Mustangs. The win over the River Hawks was in two sets by scores of 21-12, 21-11. The loss to DC-G was 17-21, 18-21, and the Rams dropped the Ballard match 13-21, 14-21.
Head coach Chris Heisterkamp said senior setter Violet Reedy was all over the court. “She even made one set from her knees after sliding in low to save the pass!” The coach added the serving was overall strong led by senior Emma Ewalt at 15 of 15 and junior Lila Osterson 13 for 13.
Osterson had 10 kills on the night with 10 by senior Emma Shipley and eight from senior Payton Kokenge, The leader in digs was junior Addison Gannon at 13, followed by senior Haley Carman and sophomore with six apiece. Reedy had four blocks and 34 setting assists.
