Now that school is back in rhythm, there are key rules that people should be following.

Dallas County Deputy Bret Maxwell emphasizes that drivers need to be aware of the decrease in speed when it comes to school zones. Most school zones require a speed limit between 15-25 mph. According to Maxwell, another big violation that is commonly found are drivers disobeying the laws surrounding school buses. Drivers are supposed to fully stop on both sides of the road while a bus has its signals flashing. Maxwell discusses the penalties attached to ignoring the law.

“Along with a hefty fine is that it’ll suspend your driver’s license. The DOT (Department of Transportation) automatically will do that upon conviction. Big thing for especially kids learning how to drive, paying attention to the speed limits and obeying all the laws and everything like that.”

Maxwell notes that the fines vary depending on how far over the speed limit drivers are going. He reminds people to be mindful of the rules of the road around school zones.
