Anyone looking for some entertainment to wind down the summer season are invited to a one-time performance on Saturday at Spring Lake Park in Greene County.
Community Players of Greene County are performing the 2nd Annual Radio Hour at the main shelter house at Spring Lake Park on Saturday at 5pm. Director Josh Tuel says following the covid pandemic, it was tough for their organization to find people to be in their shows and getting rehearsals scheduled. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the Community Players did the Radio Hour as a reader’s theater style so they could get more people to participate.
“That was pretty successful. We actually had a lot more folks there than we kind of anticipated. The free will donations were fantastic. When I re-joined the board earlier this year I wanted to set this as kind of a staple. So that we would do this every August, at Spring Lake, and have that as kind of a staple to the season that people could come to expect.”
Tuel notes that this year, they have over 20 people who are a part of the 2nd Annual Radio Hour. He states there are five programs that will be acted and read to the audience that were originally radio programs from the 1930s to the 1950s. Saturday’s show includes “The Bickerson’s,” “Little Orphan Annie,” “The Lottery,” “Who’s On First,” and “Fibber McGee and Molly.” He gives everyone an idea of how many scripts he has found that are part of the public domain and they don’t have to pay for the rights to perform them.
“For instance, like ‘Fibber McGee and Molly,’ the site I go to, has maybe 19 episodes in their entirety. So essentially we could do a ‘Fibber McGee and Molly’ every year for 19 years until we had to go find something else. I would say, oh I don’t know the site that I like to use there are probably at least 70 different radio programs with varying amounts of scripts for each one. There is a lot to choose from.”
Tuel adds that attendees need to bring their own seating, as none is provided, as well as encouraging people to bring food and beverages to enjoy. Free will donations will also be accepted.
