An organization in the Perry community will be helping students during Thursday’s Farmer’s Market.
New Opportunities Dallas County Outreach Coordinator Beth Morman shares that the company aims to assist low income families within Dallas County. She points out that there are red donation boxes set up around Perry at HyVee, Fareway, Ace Hardware, and the Tractor Supply Store. Morman names acceptable items to donate, plus how the organization distributes them.
“Crayons, colored pencils, folders, notebooks, hand sanitizer, and you can just drop them off in that box. We do check them like weekly, so we collect those school supplies, bring it back to our office and we hold onto it until we start filling those school bags for the kids in need for the Perry School District and then they get a school bag with school supplies.”
Morman mentions that the New Opportunities School Supply Program deadline was July 31st, but are allowing people to contribute on Thursday from 4-7pm at the Perry Farmer’s Market for Back to School Night.
“We will be set up there taking donations for any additional school supplies that people would like to bring to us. We usually have a really good turnout from the public. We also do take monetary donations, so like if we don’t get enough of something, we can go out and buy it. And then we usually go shopping that night to use that money up and get the stuff that we’re needing for our kids that are still in need in the community.”
Morman encourages people to consider giving money at the farmer’s market as the pickup date for the donations will be this Friday and this coming Monday.
