The Dallas County Emergency Management Agency offers recommendations when dealing with lightning and torrential rain.

The state of Iowa is witnessing plenty of rain, especially within the Dallas County area and it’s a good reminder to stay safe in potentially dangerous situations. Dallas County Emergency Management Specialist Alicia Scott tells Raccoon Valley Radio that people should always monitor alerts and warnings in the area. When lightning is present, she describes that people need to move indoors to a nearby building or a car with a roof above it.

Scott advises against using electronic devices that are connected to an electrical outlet and avoid running water. The National Weather Service will issue a flood warning if the water builds up to a dangerously high level, which Scott suggests to find shelter immediately instead of attempting to fight through high waters as it takes just six inches of moving water to physically disrupt a person and one foot to affect vehicles.
