The new school year is less than one month away and families that are looking for some financial help will get some this weekend.
According to the Iowa Department of Revenue, the annual Iowa Sales Tax Holiday starts midnight on Friday through midnight on Saturday. People that purchase clothing items or footwear that are individually priced for less than $100 will not be charged sales tax or local option sales and services tax (LOSST). This is meant for each item that is under $100 will not have a sales tax associated with it.
Jefferson Matters Executive Director Matt Wetrich encourages people to think local first with the retailers in Jefferson.
“You can certainly hit up to consignment options in town. Of course for mom, maybe some high schoolers as well, but moms can treat themselves at the Funky Zebras. And then I guess you’d probably have a few options at Bomgaars. Just get out there and shop locally as much as you can and do what you can to take advantage of that and you know support your local folks as well.”
The Iowa Department of Revenue defines clothing as apparel and typically footwear that is worn on or about the human body. A list of items that do not qualify for the Sales Tax Holiday as well as other information can be found by clicking here.
