A non-profit organization for a three county area, including Greene County, is continuing to seek volunteers for home repairs.

Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Ron Christensen says more volunteers in Greene County are needed to assist with Helping Hands projects. He points out that Helping Hands projects are repairs and replacements to the exteriors of owner-occupied homes.

Christensen explains that with volunteers, the homeowner receives free labor and the volunteers get to improve the overall look of a neighborhood and do something good for someone. He shares what happens if there are no volunteers to do Helping Hands projects in Greene County.

“Without that, I end up having to contact the work out and then that adds cost to the homeowner, because I have to pay the volunteers (the contractor) and then the homeowner has to pay that cost back. So if we have volunteers that reduces the costs to the homeowner and that helps everybody out.”

Christensen says anyone who wants to volunteer does not need a skill of doing the repairs or replacements and they typically work on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity includes Greene, Boone and Guthrie Counties. Contact Christensen in the main office in Boone at 515-432-1168 to be a volunteer.
