The Perry Jayettes closed out the regular season at home last night and they exploded for 14 runs, eight of which came in the fifth inning. The scoring began in the second inning when Perry got the first two hitters on. Taryn Nehring knocked home a pair making it 2-0. It was a double play initiated by the Huskies shortstop to escape that inning without any more damage.

In the third, Emmalee Bell walked and then an error allowed Tunink to get on as well, that’s when the confusion started. A couple of controversial calls brought this inning to a standstill. Both coaches were begging for explanations and players on both sides were holding their hands up. The Jayettes had second and third nobody out but couldn’t score because of it. There was no rhythm and those calls took away hits from a couple of Jayettes. Shortstop Alayna Jarret had a couple of nice plays to steal some hits away as well capped by a sliding backhand deep in the hole followed by a strong throw to finish the inning.

Four runs came across for the Huskies in the top of the fifth with two RBIs from Jarret and cleanup hitter Amora McDonald. Again the officiating hurt the Jayettes and because of that and everything that had gone wrong, the offense came alive with loud contact and the crooked number. Karagyn Whelchel had the big hit that the Jayettes had been looking for all night, a two RBI double with one out. Then Emmalee Bell with the exclamation point in the fifth with a three-run home-run to straightaway center field with two outs. She finished her night 4-4 with two doubles, a homer, a single, a walk, and four RBIs. Both Whelchel’s and Kassidy Atwell had a pair of RBI’s as well.

Maci Tunink pitched the full seven innings getting the W and striking out seven Huskies.

Perry will be on the road Thursday night at Dennison-Schleswig for the first round of substate playoffs. First pitch scheduled for 7 pm.
