According to the state law that was passed in 2017, residents in the rural portions of Greene County are allowed to use fireworks from now until July 8th.

Jefferson Fire Chief and Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams has some safety reminders for individuals looking to celebrate with fireworks. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that people should choose a safe area to light fireworks, especially near switchgrass.

“So fires can start fairly easily, yet. We’re not in a burn ban and not close to being in a burn ban because it’s just a warning that stuff will light on fire with fireworks.”

Williams advises to stay away from structures, like homes with asphalt roofs and gutters with leaves, because an errant firework can easily set those materials on fire. He also recommends having a water source nearby, so that if something catches fire, it can be prevented from getting bigger.
