After seeing some hotter temperatures outdoors and some reports about children being left inside hot vehicles, health officials are reminding everyone of the problems that can cause.

Greene County Public Health Director Becky Wolf says it is a dangerous idea to leave anyone, especially children, in a parked vehicle when it’s really hot outside and the parent needs to run a quick errand.

“But just keep in mind that if you leave somebody in a parked car and the car is in the sun, there’s going to be a rise of 20 degrees in ten minutes, and they can die quickly.”

As a reminder, newer vehicles that are left in park for an extended period of time can automatically shut off air conditioning. If a situation where children are in a parked vehicle by themselves is reported, law enforcement can charge the motorist and issue a fine.
