The Greene County Farmers Market is off and running for the year and a new program is being introduced to help more people in the county get fresh food.

Thomas Jefferson Gardens Board President Danielle Ross says New Opportunities of Greene County Coordinator Teresa Lansman will be giving out $10 vouchers to families with children that are customers of the local food pantry, the Greene County Action Resource Center. She notes that families can use these vouchers for bread, honey, produce, vegetables and plants only at the Greene County Farmers Market.

Ross thanks Jefferson Kiwanis Club for donating $500 towards this program as she explains why she wanted to start something like this.

“Well we want to encourage healthy living here in Greene County. We should be looking after our neighbors and our friends. This is also a great educational opportunity. If you don’t know how to grow things, how to cook things, the vendors are a great source for education for this.”

Ross is looking for more sponsors to get up to $1,700 in vouchers so that everyone who uses the food pantry can receive a $10 voucher for the farmers market. Call the Thomas Jefferson Gardens and Welcome Center at 515-386-2155.
