The Guthrie County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Tuesday.
The board approved the 28E agreement with Heart of Iowa Mental Health Region and a 28E agreement between Guthrie and Adair Counties for Home Health and Public Health Services. They also approved the abatement of a property near Yale, appointed Stacy Harris-Molina as the Commissioner for the Veterans Affairs Commission, and began discussions on the fiscal year 2024-25 budget appropriation.
During those discussions, Supervisor Mike Dickson suggested a 50/50 split for appropriations for all departments except the Sheriff’s Office, for which he suggested a quarterly split of 25 percent. Supervisor Brian Johnson thought that that treatment was punitive, and that requiring a monthly or bimonthly report should be plenty to help the Sheriff’s Office stay under budget, to which Dickson replied that they had tried that, and those reports were almost never submitted. After more discussion including the other Supervisors, it was approved to appropriate 50 percent of the budget for all departments besides the Sheriff’s Office, and to appropriate 25% of their budget for the time being. The vote came out 4-1, as Johnson still believed that this was a step too far.
The Board then tabled a decision on the land donation from Norma Stetzel, as the parcel is relatively small, and they wanted to get some more information, then they canvassed the June 4th Primary Election results. Two races had Libertarian write-ins that tied, and an individual had to be chosen by random draw. Clinton Deardorff was drawn as the nominee for the District Two Supervisor seat should he accept, and Auditor Dani Fink was pulled for the Auditor seat, but as she is already running as a Republican, denied to run as Libertarian by public statement during the meeting.
