A representative from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reveals precautions to take when out on the water during severe weather.

Iowa DNR Conservation Officer Dustin Eighmy tells Raccoon Valley Radio to double check the weather before leaving the dock. Eighmy reminds people to begin heading back to shore if dark clouds start to form in the sky. He elaborates on the dangers of being on the water following a storm.

“Anytime after a storm, it takes a while for all that water to drain out of the watershed. The rivers are rising (with) that debris that is just floating under the surface with those muddy murky waters, which is hard to see.”

Eighmy emphasizes that rivers are constantly changing following storms leading to unpredictable occurrences and to be aware of the situations dealing with severe weather.
