There been a major change for wrestling in the Iowa Girls High Schools Athletic Union for the upcoming 2024-2025 season.
The IGHSAU has had one class for girls wrestling, but in the last couple of weeks it was announced that the classes will split into two. Raccoon River Wrestling (RRW) is a team consisting of four schools: Adel-DeSoto-Minburn, Van Meter, Waukee Northwest, and Waukee. Head Coach James Biscoglia tells Raccoon Valley Radio that he was an advocate, wanting the union to have separate classes. He believes that the decision will be great for the sport to grow in order for more girls to have opportunities to become place finishers.
“To really give as many girls as ought to have the opportunity to have the experience of being a state place winner and as we grow sports, the opportunity for success is certainly one of the things that helps to grow it.”
Biscoglia looks forward to seeing how the change can positively affect the sport. During the 2023-2024 season, RRW’s Sophomore Katie Biscoglia defeated Decorah’s Chloe Sheffield on her way to become a Two-Time Undefeated Champion in the 100 pound weight class.
