The Raccoon Valley Radio listening area continues to receive rain.

A storm system came through on May 19th, and at 8:30pm, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Adair, Audubon, Guthrie and Madison Counties lasting until 8:45pm. During this time, communities along the Interstate 80 corridor like Adair, Casey and Stuart saw strong winds and heavy rains. A new severe thunderstorm warning was issued before the first ended, and the same area was covered, with the warning to end at 9:30pm.

At 9pm, Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeremy Cooper reported that he had seen two individual shelf clouds in the storm system, one in Adair County and the other in Guthrie County. He also shared that he’d heard reports of hail from pea-sized up to quarter-sized.

Cooper mentioned that according to radar images at the time, the stormfront was coming upon the Adel area with the northern end of the storm passing the Perry Airport. He shared that there had also been reports of 50-60 mile per hour wind gusts.

The National Weather Service noted at 9:04pm that a line of severe thunderstorms was located stretching from the Perry Municipal Airport to Adel, then continued to four miles southeast of Winterset, with the stormfront moving east at 40 miles per hour.

Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeremey Cooper helped share information, and three members of Raccoon Valley Radio took part in the Severe Weather Action Team coverage.
