The second largest paid attendance for the three day Iowa High School State Track & Field Coed Meet was treated to great weather and performances at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. More than 39,500 paid to see the state’s best high schoolers on the track and in the field.
The top place finisher among athletes from Greene County was from Paton-Churdan. The Rockets had just one qualifier, but freshman Trevon Keely put on quite a show. He finished second in the Class 1A boys’ high jump, clearing the bar at a personal best height of 6′ 5″. Senior Lance Bunde of ACGC won the event at 6′ 6″ and senior Kolby Culbertson of Coon Rapids-Bayard was third, equalling Keely’s jump of 6′ 5″, with the second place tie broken on fewer misses. Uncommonly, the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area had the top three finishers among the 24 qualifiers in that event.
Greene County had five events for boys and three for girls, but none placed in the top eight. The only Saturday event for the Rams was the 2A girls’ 800 meter run where sophomore Kaycee Pittman placed fifteenth with a time of 2:25.12. Junior discus thrower Isaac Carman had the highest placing for the Rams’ events, finishing tenth with a best toss of 149′ 3″.
