A new take on a returning program is looking to engage more people in Greene County to enjoy live jazz music.

The Greene County High School Band Department is hosting “BBQ and Blues” happening Monday starting at 6pm in the high school commons area. Band Director Wes Anderson says the high school jazz and a small combo of students will be performing. He points out this new event is a reimagining of Java and Jazz, and it was born out of necessity when he couldn’t find a professional or a collegiate jazz ensemble that could perform for the public and play with his students.

Anderson talks about BBQ and Blues being a positive opportunity for the students to play songs that reach over 70 in their folders and perform them in a public setting.

“Mostly look at our blues and our swing (style of songs), and we could really do a deep dive on that and make even an hour, hour and 30 (minute) set that we could play. It’s something that I’ve always associated with in my mind , blues and barbecue. And I know a lot of people  probably when you are at a barbecue restaurant you’re probably are going to hearing blues on their radio in the restaurant.    

Anderson is excited to announce that a previous high school graduate, Parker Willis, will also be in the band. He also thanks Bett and Bev’s BBQ for providing the food for people to enjoy while listening to blues and swing music for a free will donation. Anderson adds all proceeds will be used to help purchase additional instruments for the band department.
