A representative from the Dallas County Health Department shares strategies to remember in order to avoid dealing with skin cancer.
Community Health Educator Natalie Peters discourages people from using artificial tanning beds as they produce a powerful amount of UltraViolet (UV) light. She adds that the sun will also give off UV rays, and staying in the shade and wearing clothing to cover arms and legs will help mitigate over exposure. Peters encourages people to schedule a yearly check up with their doctor.
“The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that everyone see a dermatologist for a full body scan exam once a year and then more often if you have a high risk of skin cancer, which you can discuss with your doctor.”
Peters reiterates to be mindful in between check ups looking for new skin growth, sores that don’t heal, or even changes in moles as those can act as early warning signs for skin cancer.
