The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.

During reports, County Attorney Thomas Laehn talked about a positive comment from a victim of a case that was handled by Assistant County Attorney Laura Snider. He also mentioned that his office is going to assist with the Guthrie County Attorney’s Office for a few days because the Guthrie County Attorney is expecting to have a baby soon.

County Auditor Billie Jo Hoskins presented a letter of request from Deb McGinn asking if the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower could be lit up in pink during the first weekend of June, to coordinate with the city of Jefferson’s proclamation by the mayor of June being Barbie month. This relates to the 1,000 Barbie dolls that are going to be on public display throughout June. Laehn reminded the Board that the request would go against their established policy of not allowing an outside organization to request the bell tower be lit in any color for any reason.

Next, Bryon Helmus spoke in favor of the comments from a letter to the editor from Janice Harbaugh about the negative conditions and comments made about juveniles from Greene County that were at the Central Iowa Detention Center in Eldora. The Board said the it was misinformation and that due to there being limited resources available, the facility in Eldora is held in high regard for their treatment and professionalism.

Jefferson City Administrator Scott Peterson reported that there is a pre-construction meeting for the East Lincoln Way resurfacing project scheduled for the end of this month, with construction to begin sometime in June. He mentioned that the ongoing project to convert cemetery information to being online made a breakthrough with the vendor that made its first pass and now staff are reviewing it.

The Board then approved the county sheriff’s quarterly report of fees and an agreement with Greene County Ambulance and Image Trend for a software upgrade for reporting. Ambulance Director Michelle Madsen said they needed to have the upgrade from the free services, due to the upgrade that the sheriff’s office is doing so that the same interface is available and it would help to have more accurate and timely reporting from calls and services they provide. The one-time setup fee was $675 and the annual fee was $3,500.

Additionally, the Board heard about a policy that was made between the county auditor’s office and the county treasurer’s office of a procedure to follow when considering reissuing uncashed checks, and they approved a credit card use policy. County Treasurer Katlynn Mechaelsen said they added to an existing policy with language that included “any lawful purpose” for when using county credit cards for various purchases. The Board also approved a retail alcohol license for Lakeside National Golf Club as presented and they reviewed a proposed budget amendment for the current fiscal year, with the public hearing scheduled for May 28th.
