Two entities in Greene County are teaming up for an early literacy program for youth.

Greene County ISU Extension and Greene County Libraries Association are hosting “Raising School Ready Readers” that takes place on five Tuesdays from April 30th through May 28th from 5:30-7pm at the Extension Office in Jefferson. Extension Director Lori Mannel says parents and their children from ages three to six get to participate together at each session, as parents learn tips and strategies to turn simple routines into learning opportunities with their kids.

“It’s interactive learning. So it’s also educating the parents on how it’s best for kids to learn, but it’s also just play time. So the kids don’t realize that they’re in an educational session, they’re just there to have a light meal, have some play time with some other littles, and then work with their parents through each of the stations.”

Mannel points out two ISU Extension Human Sciences Specialists will be conducting the classes and you don’t have to be at every session. The program is free, but registration is required by April 29th. Contact the Extension Office at 515-386-2138 or stop by to sign up. This program is co-sponsored by the Greene County Board of Supervisors.
