With the warmth of a winter season that there was this year, many people are thinking and planning how of what they want to grow this summer in their gardens, and one agricultural business in Jefferson already has a popular food growing.

Chris Deal is with Deal’s Orchard and he says they planted their first batch of sweetcorn on March 7th, which is about one month earlier than sweetcorn is typically planted.

“But as soon as we can get some in the ground, it’s always kind of that rush to get it in. In a perfect world we have sweetcorn, that sweetcorn ready by July 4th or a little beforehand. But that’s always going to be dedicated by what summer weather turns into.”

Chris points out one other time that sweetcorn was planted even earlier, over ten years ago, on March 1st. He recalls last year sweetcorn was planted late, due to the late spring season, which led to sweetcorn being harvested after July 4th. Chris notes that choosing when to plant the first sweetcorn crop is a gamble.

“So we’ll see with it. I know anytime we’ve got early action it always makes it a little more anxiety it brings for us in the fruit and vegetable world.”

The ideal time frame for sweetcorn to be eaten is during the month of July.
