The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.

During reports, Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams said the new emergency communications tower at Seven Hills Park has been marked for utilities and placement. He anticipated the construction of the tower to be completed by this August.

County Attorney Thomas Laehn reported that the Dallas County Board of Supervisors approved a 28E agreement for Greene County to install radio equipment on a communications tower in Perry, so that the signal to help enhance Greene County’s tower. He said the same agreement would be on next week’s meeting agenda for approval. He mentioned that the main courtroom had new technology installed, with the cost to the state. The same would eventually happen to the magistrate courtroom.

Jefferson City Administrator Scott Peterson then gave his update. He talked about four grants that were received for city-related projects. Three came from Grow Greene County Gaming Corporation with funding for two new pickleball courts, a pool heater and new body and in-vehicle cameras for the police department. The other grant was from Greene County Community Foundation for a new swing set at Head Park.

Peterson gave an update on the apartment housing project with KCG Companies. He said the company is applying for low income housing tax credits and will be notified in July if they receive those. Peterson mentioned that there have been other housing developers interested in Jefferson, due to the Iowa Thriving Communities designation. He is hoping for more single family homes to be built, using workforce housing tax credits. Peterson also talked about Tim Heisterkamp looking to make some improvements to the former Homestead Bakery building for his business to expand.

Next, the Board approved to terminate a contract for the Information Technology Director and Drainage District Clerk position, which allows for that to be a regular county employee position. They also approved the quarterly report of fees from the County Recorder, as well as the County Auditor’s quarterly passport report. The Board then approved the grant application of $1,900 to New Opportunities for the county substance abuse program, an engagement letter with Northland Securities to be the underwriter for the bonds for the county jail project, and a resolution to declare an official intent under Treasury regulation to issue debt to reimburse the county for payments made with the county jail project.
