Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is looking to help the state of Texas with immigration by sending Iowa troops, and Iowa Senator Sarah Trone-Garriott wants to keep the focus inside the state.

A recent press release states that Governor Reynolds will be distributing more than 100 Iowa National Guard and Iowa Department of Public Safety officers to Texas to assist in enforcement efforts for the United States and Mexico border. Senator Trone-Garriott points out that Iowa has its own pressing matters that need to be addressed. She names some of the unmet needs in the state.

“We’ve got a good number of children all across the state, over 240,000 kids, who depend on free and reduced lunch and they’re not going to have anything to eat this summer. There’s things here that we need to be focused on. I would just like to see our governor be a little more attentive to what is happening in the borders of our state.”

Trone-Garriott believes that the money being used, which she notes is American Rescue Plan Dollars, should be utilized for the state of Iowa before looking elsewhere.
