Greene County was a 7-2 high school boys’ soccer winner on Thursday in Jefferson at Linduska Field to open the 2024 season. Coach Carl Behne’s Rams were postponed by weather on Tuesday vs. Boone, so last night they began the schedule vs. Central Iowa United, based at West Marshall (State Center). The Rams have a number of experienced players back from the 2023 squad that went 13-5 and qualified for the Class 2A State Tournament.
Senior Gesser Gutierres scored a whopping six goals and senior Nathan Behne had the other. Gutierres now has 75 career goals and Behne played for the first time since 2022 after missing the 2023 season when recovering from knee surgery. Gutierres scored his first goal less than two minutes into the season. One of his goals came on a penalty kick. Gesser (pronounced Hesser) had all five half goals for Greene County, leading the Rams to a 5-2 advantage at intermission.
Austin Lane had both CIU goals, one on a penalty kick.
The Rams are set to make up vs. Boone in Jefferson on Monday, April 1 after the Boone and Greene County girls open the girl/boy doubleheader at 5:30 p.m.
